Office of Community Engagement

"At one level, the scholarship of engagement means connecting the rich resources of the university to our most pressing social, civic, and ethical problems, to our children, to our schools, to our teachers, and to our cities... but, at a deeper level... the scholarship of engagement also means creating a special climate in which the academic and civic cultures communicate more continuously and more creatively with each other, helping to enlarge what anthropologist Clifford Geertz describes as the universe of human discourse and enriching the quality of life for all of us."

Boyer, 1996, pp. 250-251

The College of Education Office of Community Engagement houses activities that promote collaboration and partnerships between FIU COE and schools, community-based organizations and economic enterprises in the greater South Florida community and beyond. In 2011, FIU was awarded Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Read more about the award at news.fiu.edu), and the OCE seeks to further FIU's mission of collaborative engagement at the College level.

An important function of the OCE is to assist College of Education faculty and students in seeking external funding opportunities that will support their research and scholarship efforts as they work to improve critical issues in our schools and community. Showcasing the community engagement work and accomplishments of COE faculty and students to further enhance the visibility of the COE within the University and beyond is also a critical function of the OCE.

The COE has a long history of working with the South Florida school districts, as well as a number of other types of agencies in our community. Faculty and administrators are active participants in a variety of workgroups that comprise the University-wide collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools in the initiative known as ACCESS: Achieving Community Collaboration in Education and Student Success (Learn more about ACCESS). [Hyperlink to the ACCESS Brochure: http://engagement.fiu.edu/_assets/docs/ACCESS%20Brochure%20-%2010-31-13.pdf] We want to build on these relationships and create stronger links with other institutions and partners as we seek solutions that are Worlds Ahead and that turn the impossible into the inevitable

The Office of Community Engagement is located in ZEB 338. For more information, please contact Dr. Deborah Hasson or Maria Tester.
