Since 2011, FIU College of Education faculty and administrators have partnered with the Mission International Rescue Charities, a non-profit organization that runs a co-educational elementary school and two vocational oriented middle through high schools for young women and young men in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The COE MIR Faculty Teams have provided weeklong professional development sessions for educators right before the Dominican school year begins, as well as a series of follow-up sessions during the academic year. Topics have included interactive teaching and cooperative learning; lesson planning; student motivation and classroom management; literacy strategies for vocabulary, reading and writing; Response to Intervention; parent and family involvement; and teacher professionalism. Much work has also been done with the school administrators, which has culminated in a policies and procedures manual for the schools, which is something they have never had. COE faculty return from La Romana energized and enthusiastic about the consistent progress they see in the MIR schools. Every trip is a learning experience, and the team is always ready to go back to share teaching and learning experiences with the wonderful MIR educators!
