Brief Description of the Program:

The Master of Science in Adult Education (AE) program is designed for individuals who choose to serve the field as director/manager, program developer, teacher/instructor, advisor, and/or researcher. Graduates typically facilitate, manage, and evaluate learning programs for adult clients, volunteers, students, and associates in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. A sampling of the roles filled by AE master’s degree graduates includes community school administration, continuing education, urban education, adult ESOL, and adult literacy.

Through the program, participants are provided with a strong foundation in the theories, research, and best practices in the field. Interacting with faculty mentors, contributors to the field (through their works), and their peers, participants work to enhance their critical thinking, verbal and written communication skills, and their own lifelong learning strategies. The internship component affords participants the opportunity to directly apply what they have learned to AE issues and problems in an operational setting. This program also provides the course requirements that, in part, qualify individuals for state certification in Florida public schools in adult education administration. The program caters to working professionals with evening and Saturday classes and offers courses at both the University Park Campus in Miami and the Broward-Pines Center in Pembroke Pines.

Admission Requirements:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 credits of upper-division undergraduate coursework;
  2. Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which (two are preferred) must be from a person familiar with the applicant’s undergraduate work and able to comment knowledgeably on his or her ability to perform graduate-level work;
  3. A personal statement of 1,000 words or less explaining any personal and professional goals you plan to achieve with the accomplishment of the degree. Please list any recognitions of achievement that you have received (e.g. licenses, publications, awards). Provide any additional information that you would like considered in the evaluation of the application;
  4. A résumé describing at least the past five years of employment history and significant community, professional, or college extracurricular activities.

Program Requirements:

The Adult Education program is designed for persons seeking a general degree in AE or in meeting the state certification requirements for Adult Education Administration. For certification, applicants must also meet the state requirement of three years of elementary and/or secondary teaching experience.
