These notes are intended to reflect how we as Editors of New Horizons, would like to work with you, as a guest editor of a special issue. They should not be viewed as cast in stone and are, therefore, subject to negotiation and evolutionary change. Special issues should be thematic. The process guidelines concern three basic issues:

Editorial Control:

Our intention is to provide each guest editor with maximum flexibility and control without relinquishing our responsibility for maintaining the journal’s quality and focus.

Editorial Cohesion:

Editorial cohesion is facilitated by the strength of the Guest Editor’s vision and articulation of that vision for the special issue. The Guest Editor determines the origin of the papers for special issues (invited, selected from a preconference, innovative session or symposium, response to a call) and makes the initial selection of manuscripts.

A Special Issue proposal should include:

  • Introduction (the overarching problem or question and an overview of the relevant research and competitive publications).
  • Purpose of the issue.
  • Outline of contents, including:
    • Authors’ names.
    • Article descriptions (content, purpose, and/or features of each).
  • Editor and authors bios (with full contact information for all contributors).
  • Timeline that includes anticipated full manuscript submission date, an external review process, etc.
  • All cited and key references listed in APA 5th edition (http://www.apastyle.org) format.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Editors in consultation with the Editorial Board.

Mechanics of Assembling a Special Issue:

  • All manuscripts submitted for a special issue must follow the Guidelines for Manuscript Submission (guidelines.htm).
  • The Guest Editor should review and edit each manuscript prior to submitting the special issue to the Editors.
  • The Guest Editor can suggest an appropriate collection of independent reviewers for the manuscripts. The manuscripts are submitted for a standard, blind review process by 3 reviewers which will take a minimum of 6 weeks.
  • Feedback from this blind review process will be shared with the Guest Editor who will draft the summary letters to the authors and work with the authors to improve their manuscripts.
  • The Guest Editor is responsible for overseeing revision, final editing, and securing signed copyright release forms.
  • Once this process is complete, the entire special issue will be submitted to the Editorial staff for a final review, standard copy editing, and page proofs. The final special issue will then be placed in the queue and given a publication date.
