Chairperson/Professor ELPS

The College of Education at Florida International University (FIU) is conducting a nationwide search for an effective, forward-thinking chairperson for its Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. The College is seeking an experienced leader who thrives on the challenges facing a department located in Miami, Florida, a large, urban multicultural and multilingual environment.

FIU has experienced rapid growth and continuously enhanced stature since its founding in 1972.  The university is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University in the High Research Activity Category and is the youngest college or university ever to have been awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.  The Department has a wide range of graduate programs and coordinates the undergraduate and graduate professional education, educational foundations courses, and core courses which are part of the required common preparation of initial teacher education students. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Full professor with previous administrative experience as program coordinator, leader or division head.  National or international reputation as a scholar with record of publication in the social, psychological, or trandisciplinary studies in education including race, ethnicity, and social class.

Ph.D. in education or related field of study, exceptional professional experience and accomplishments in educational settings, broadly defined, preferred.

Preference given to a national leader in the study of urban education and in the development of quality doctoral programs.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The department chair serves as the academic
leader and manager of the research, teaching, and engagement missions of the Department, College and University.  As academic leader the principal opportunity afforded the new chair is the cohesion of intellectual strands currently distributed across a variety of academic programs.  These include: adult education/human resource development, educational leadership, higher education, urban education, international and intercultural education, and parks and recreation. Currently the College and the University are engaged in an intense period of strategic planning as; FIU seeks to become one of the nation's top urban research universities.

In addition to the customary duties such as overseeing promotion and tenure, recruitment of full time and part time faculty, marketing of its academic programs and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students, the chair will help shape a shared intellectual vision for the department.
