Instructor — Foreign Language Education/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, FIU invites candidates for a full-time non-tenure Instructor position in TESOL beginning in August 2008. The candidate’s area of research should complement and add to the research currently being conducted by other program faculty. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching and research in TESOL; be able to add to and complement the Department and College’s goals (http://education.fiu.edu/about_us.htm). Duties include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in language learning methods and theory. Main responsibilities also include supervision of student teachers. Additional duties include participating in Department, University, and community service activities. Teaching at satellite campuses is also possible.

*Qualifications*: Earned doctorate in Foreign Language Education, Bilingual Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistic, or a related field. Teach online undergraduate and graduate courses in ESL, develop and maintain collaborative partnerships and experience working with doctoral students. Advanced proficiency in Haitian Creole, Patois, Portuguese, or Spanish.

Ability to teach research-based foreign language teaching methods, second language acquisition, foreign language assessment; literacy and content-based instruction; and issues related to English Language Learners, Bilingual Education, and English as an International Language; strength in advocating for English Language Learners; willingness to teach using distance technologies; a demonstrated record of, or potential for, scholarly productivity; K-12 teaching experience; language learning and teaching experience outside the US.

*Responsibilities*: Teaching face-to-face and online undergraduate and graduate courses in ESL; develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with professionals in schools and community agencies both inside and outside the US; assist with recruitment, retention, advise, work, and collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students, including doctoral students, and provide service at all levels: university, local, state, national, and international.
