Brief Description of the Program:

The Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Student Education provides the professional preparation necessary to teach students with mild disabilities. It meets the new non-categorical Florida certification requirements and is designed to include the competencies necessary for ESOL endorsement. State of Florida certification requirements are met through challenging coursework, field experiences, and student teaching.

Admission Requirements:

  • A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale;
  • Either 60 credit hours of lower division coursework or an AA degree from an accredited institution;
  • A passing score on all sections of the CLAST exam. Students who are exempt from all sections of the CLAST and are majoring in teacher preparation programs may substitute the General Knowledge Exam (GK) for the CLAST;
  • Must meet the following lower division requirements:
    • University Core/General Education;
    • Foreign language;
    • EDF 1005: Introduction to Education (3 credits)
    • EDG 2701: Teaching Diverse Populations (3 credits)
    • EME 2040: Introduction to Educational Technology (3 credits)
    • In addition to EDG 2701, students must take 6 additional semester hours with an international or diversity focus. For example, at FIU, these types of courses can be found under the Societies and Identities category of the University Core Curriculum List.
