Brief Description of the Program:

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education provides the professional preparation necessary to teach mathematics to students in grades 6 through 12. State of Florida certification requirements are met through coursework, field experiences, and student teaching.

Admission Requirements:

  • A minimum lower-division GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale;
  • Either 60 credit hours of lower division coursework or an AA degree from an accredited institution;
  • A passing score on all sections of the CLAST exam. Students who are exempt from all sections of the CLAST and are majoring in teacher preparation programs may substitute the General Knowledge Exam (GK) for the CLAST;
  • Must meet the following lower division requirements:
    • University Core/General Education;
    • Foreign language;
    • EDF 1005: Introduction to Education (3 credits)
    • EDG 2701: Teaching Diverse Populations (3 credits)
    • EME 2040: Introduction to Educational Technology (3 credits)
    • In addition to EDG 2701, students must take 6 additional semester hours with an international or diversity focus. For example, at FIU, these types of courses can be found under the Societies and Identities category of the University Core Curriculum List.

  • Total Credits: 129
    • Lower division credits: 60
    • Upper division credits: 69
  • Students may register for a maximum of 15 credits prior to admission to the program;
  • MAE 4333C is a prerequisite for MAE 4942;
  • TSL 4340 is not offered in the summer term;
  • All courses must be taken prior to student teaching.
