Greetings from the Center for Urban Education & Innovation at Florida International University !
We're glad you're interested in finding out about Getting Results: Expo of Best Practices in Urban Education , a national conference in Miami Beach , FL. The Expo is two days of dialogue and demonstrations showcasing the best practices of teachers, administrators and schools that have produced results in leading disenfranchised children toward academic excellence.
We have assembled a lineup of six stellar keynote speakers, including MacArthur “Genius” Fellows, award-winning authors and one Civil Rights legend:
- Dr. Lisa Delpit, Executive Director & Eminent Scholar, CUEI; MacArthur “Genius” Fellow
- Dr. Bob Moses, Eminent Scholar, CUEI; MacArthur “Genius” Fellow; Founder of the Algebra Project
- Dr. Asa Hilliard III, Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Urban Education, Georgia State University
- Dr. Pedro Noguera, Director, Center for Research on Urban Schools, New York University
- Dr. Theresa Perry, Vice President for Community Relations, Wheelock College
- Dr. Charles Payne, Sally Dalton Professor and Director of African-American Studies Program, Duke University
Our keynotes are leading national authorities, a kind of unofficial brain trust for the field. The Expo represents a rare opportunity to see them together. One of the highlights will be a press conference and panel discussion in which they will address hot-button issues like high-stakes testing.
Complementing our high-profile keynotes will be a series of presenters chosen for their track record in the classroom. They are not merely theoreticians, but true practitioners who have achieved concrete results in urban schools. So The Expo brings together the research-based innovations of some of the nation's top scholars and the pure practice of superb classroom teachers. We believe that is a potent mix that will help guests reflect deeply on their work in urban schools.
We hope this website provides all the information you need about speakers, registration and accommodations. If you have any questions, please call (305)348-6463 or email cuei@fiu.edu.

Why You Should Attend
As Lisa Delpit suggests, we in education often allow politicians to push us to act as if the most important goal of our work is to raise test scores. Never mind the development of the human beings in our charge—the integrity, the artistic expression, the ingenuity, the persistence, or the kindness of those who will inherit the earth. The challenge of developing these vital qualities is even more daunting in our urban schools, where many teachers have not learned to use strategies specific to children who are not from the mainstream; where there aren't always enough books for every student; and where little is done to engage the community for help.
Society looks the other way when we forget poor, disenfranchised children of color because they are perceived as too troubled or too lazy to achieve in the classroom. But these children have the potential for genius that is the gift of all children. With the help of good teachers, disenfranchised children can learn. In fact, if our country is to live up to its ideals, these underserved students must learn lessons of living, creativity and thinking about big issues.
We know disenfranchised children can learn at the highest level because we see them do it all the time. It is in the spirit of sharing the sometimes unacknowledged achievements of these children and their teachers that we present Getting Results, the Center for Urban Education & Innovation's first national conference. As our Expo grows every year, we hope it becomes one of the most important national forums on improving urban education.
