The Family Literacy Arts Program, brings teachers, parents, artists, and students together as partners in using the visual, performing and literary arts, to learn from and teach each other. The Center launced the program in 2005 when The Children’s Trust (a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County) awarded the Center an annual grant. Currently, FLAP operates at three sites: Lillie C. Evans and Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary Schools as well as North Miami Parks & Recreation.
Artists, teachers, parents and arts education specialists work collaboratively to develop innovative interactive lesson plans, field experiences and special events that increase family literacy through the arts. Using action research and project based learning, the arts workshops assist students and their families in discovering their creativity while building reading, writing, listening, speaking and critical thinking skills.
African, African American, Caribbean, Hispanic and Native cultures have made a critical impact on south Florida, the United States and the world. Their rich legacies help our students to expand their world view and appreciate all cultures.
The FLAP pedagogy impacts students on many levels:
