Visible Thinking in Early Childhood
V International Visible Thinking Conference
“Learning by Thinking”
March 12 - 14, 2015
Visible Thinking South Florida is a Florida International University community engagement initiative integrated by pre-service teachers, graduate students, alumni and early childhood practitioners from over 20 schools from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. It came together in 2006 under the leadership of Dr. Angela K. Salmon with a few of her early childhood students who were interested in creating cultures of thinking in their early childhood classrooms through action research.
Visible Thinking is an integral component of Project Zero, an educational research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. They have investigated how to enhance learning, thinking, and creativity in the arts, as well as humanistic and scientific disciplines at the individual and institutional levels since 1967. As the name suggests, the basic strategy is to make thinking visible in the context of learning.
VTSF provides support and mentoring to practitioners interested in understanding and implementing the visible thinking ideas in their classrooms. It offers professi onal development opportunities within the community in order to inspire other early childhood educators to promote a shift in classroom culture toward a community of enthusiastically engaged thinkers and learners.
Visible Thinking South Florida’s vision is to offer practitioners a learning community where they can share, learn, mentor and support each other in their goal of creating cultures of thinking and developing thinking dispositions in teachers and children to foster thoughtful learning in the arts, and across disciplines.
