OAWPS consultation services are designed to provide one-on-one assistance to students, staff or faculty on academic writing and publication issues. The consultation is meant to guide the client through some aspect of the writing and publishing process. Specifically, the consultants will assist with technical writing issues around class papers and converting class papers, dissertations, and other written projects into manuscripts that can be submitted to conferences, journals, or other venues. The consultation services do not include editing of dissertations.

Technical Writing Assistance

Types of assistance include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Grammar (i.e., subject-verb agreement, verb tense, voice)
  • Sentence structure (i.e., punctuation, parallel construction, sentence fragments)
  • Word choice (i.e., wordy sentences, consistent terminology, non-biased language)
  • Essay organization (i.e., introduction, problem, purpose, body, implications)
  •  Guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). (i.e., citation of sources in text, formatting, references)
  • Elements of papers (i.e., problem statement, purpose, literature reviews, methods, discussion, implications)


Publication Support
Types of assistance include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Converting a paper into a manuscript
  • Writing a book review
  • Responding to a conference call for papers, proposals, or abstracts
  • Identifying a possible publishing outlet and the audience
  • Understanding the publication submission guidelines
  • Making the submission relevant to the outlet
  • Working with co-authors
  • Overcoming writing blocks and being productive
  • Making multiple publications from one paper or dissertation
  • Dealing with peer-review feedback to improve the submission

      • When scheduling the appointment
        1. In the subject line put “Writing Consultation”
        2. In the body of the e-mail indicate your specific writing needs
      • Preparing for the appointment
        1. Create a written list of your questions or concerns
        2. Bring one hard copy of the paper and an electronic copy of the paper
        3. Or bring your ideas
        4. Bring the guidelines for the writing project from the syllabus, conference call, feedback from reviewers, etc.)

Ground Rules

Each participant shows his/her commitment to the consultation by agreeing to the following Ground Rules:

  • Be on time for the consultation appointment.
  • If you need to cancel, provide as much notice as possible to the consultant by sending an email message
  • Stay till the end of the consultation
  • Complete all tasks suggested by the consultant prior to each consultation appointment
  • Respond to the consultant’s emails in a timely manner
  • Participate in the consultation evaluation process/provide feedback to the consultant
