Assistant Dean of Community Engagement
Dr. Deborah J. Hasson, Associate Dean of Strategic Operations & Community Engagement in the College of Education at Florida International University, has worked, taught and conducted research in the fields of second language acquisition, English as a second language (ESL), family literacy and teacher education for 25 years. She has written articles on family education, native language maintenance in bilinguals, and preservice teachers' knowledge base, attitudes and self-efficacy toward English learners. In her present capacity she assists faculty writing proposals for externally funded projects and serves as a liaison with local school districts and community-based organizations.
Maria Tester was initially hired by the Office of Student Services in 1993 to assist the Associate Dean of the department and to help students transition in their undergraduate degree program. In 2001, she was selected to be part of the newly created graduate studies and grant office as Office Manager by providing assistance to the Associate Dean and college faculty seeking grant opportunities as well as other functions such as faculty development activities, college’s tuition waiver program. Prior to helping create the new Office of Community Engagement, she assisted the College in the Office of Research and Grants in pre and post award matters and Office of Graduate Studies coordinating the Tuition Waiver program.
